AFL SCHOOL AMBASSADOR PROGRAM

The AFL School Ambassador program aspires to movtivate and reward teachers who promote AFL to their students. AFL Ambassadors play a pivotal role in also developing strong participation numbers in community football. Since the program was implemented in 2004, over 1000 WA Primary and Secondary schools have joined the national push towards student involvement in AFL. Through the AFL School Ambassador program, in partnership with WAFC District Development Staff the following programs get implemented:

Primary School

Auskick years 1 to 3 is an introductory program to AFL Football. The objective of the program is to teach the basic skills, which include: kicking, marking, handballing, bouncing, and picking up. The program which runs from 4 to 6 weeks within the school setting also includes: fun games, which are related to the school being taught. Following the completion of these programs students are then notified of who their local community Auskick centre is.

Years 4 to 7
Take part in the following programs: Eagles Faction footy, is a curriculum based program which goes for 4 to 6 weeks and like the Auskick program, teaches and develops the kids the basic skills of AFL. Additionally, students play in a modified version of AFL. As part of the program students have the opportunity to administer and deliver their own intraschool competition.

Eagles Cup
Eagles Cup is the primary school based interschool competition which gets played each Friday afternoon in Term 2. Within the Claremont District, 40 schools take part, which involves 9 divisions. At the completion of the competition, schools then participate in interschool one day carnivals, which are held at the end of Term 2.

Docker's Cup
Like Eagle's Cup, Docker's Cup is an interschool competition for Female participants. Within the Claremont District, schools will take part in a one day lightning carnvial referred to as the Docker's Cup carnival.

Secondary School
Freo House Footy
Freo House Footy Program is a 4 to 6 week program which gets delivered as part of the secondary school physical education program. It is designed to cater for all year groups. This entails skill development, game sense drills, and modified rules football. The program is delivered to both male and female phys ed classes at all secondary schools in the Claremont District.

New auskick lesson plan bookletS for Pre-primary through year 3

While sports and specifically football have the potential to offer participants social, moral and physical benefits, the challenge facing all coaches is the abiltiy to craft sessions appropriate for their team. These booklets are intended to act as a guide for an Auskick coach with a group of Pre-Primary through Year 3 footballers. It may be implemented literally, however, it is intended to act as a framework for the session. Please feel free to use this booklet while also implementing new drills to develop the young footballers you are charged with mentoring.

media release from the australian football league: shane crawford is the new nab afl auskick ambassador

The AFL is pleased to announce Shane Crawford is the new NAB AFL Auskick National Ambassador.

Shane’s appointment was revealed in front of 150 Auskickers in Birrarung Marr in Melbourne today.

Shane said he is looking forward to being involved in NAB AFL Auskick, not only as National Ambassador, but also as a parent.

“My eldest son Charlie will attend his first Auskick clinic this weekend and it will be my first time volunteering as an Auskick parent. One of the best things about NAB AFL Auskick is that it not only teaches children the game, it also brings families together.

“Auskick is where champions begin and I can’t wait to meet the thousands of young champions throughout Australia. We are now targeting 180,000 Auskick participants so I’m going to be busy,” Shane said.

Outgoing Auskick Ambassador Robert “Dipper” DiPierdomenico introduced Shane. Dipper and Shane will travel to clinics together over the next six months adopting master - apprentice roles.

Dipper said he was thrilled Shane has accepted the role.

“Travelling the country to introduce children to our great game has been one of the highlights of my time in football. I can’t think of a better person to take the reins. Shane is a highly decorated player who has the passion to continue what I think is one of the game’s most important roles,” he said.

Shane is the father of four sons, Charlie (5), Ben (3) and four-month old twins Jack and Harry.

He played 305 games for Hawthorn from 1993 – 2008, his final match was Hawthorn’s premiership victory. The champion midfielder won the 1999 Brownlow Medal, was named an All-Australian four times and won four club best and fairests. He represented Australia three times in the International Rules series and in 2002 was captain. Shane was Hawthorn captain from 1999-2004 and was a Rising Star nominee in 1993.

Dipper will continue a role with the AFL as an AFL Ambassador. He recently returned from the AIS-AFL Academy’s tour of Europe.

AFL General Manager National and International Development Andew Dillon thanked Dipper for his 10 years as the face of NAB AFL Auskick.

“Dipper has done an outstanding job introducing our game to new participants. In his time the number of Auskickers has grown from 111,689 to 167,080 with an estimated one million girls and boys experiencing the program,” he said.

NAB AFL Auskick is the Australian Football League’s key introductory program for boys and girls aged between five - 12 and their families.

In 2011 there were 167,080 children involved in the program and there were 2700 centres.

The cost of the program can differ from state to state and centre to centre, but the general price range is between $50-$70. Auskickers receive a backpack that includes an Auskick football, cap, drink bottle, pencil set, height chart, activity book and footy cards.

To register for NAB AFL Auskick visit: www.aflauskick.com.au/register

term 1 Auskick Centres complete

This year Claremont District has just completed Auskick programs at primary schools in Dalkeith, Nedlands, Yuluma, Deanmore, and Iona, as well as Presbyterian Ladies College Primary School. Following the completion of these Auskick centres kids will now hopefully transfer and now register with their local Junior Club Auskick Centre.

These Auskick Centres not only encourage young children to partake in football, but do so with the goal of developing confidence in these children to stimulate further interest in joining their local club. Auskick Centres are extremely important because if kids weren’t playing Auskick, then there would be no future for AFL players, meaning there would not be footy. Auskick Centres serve as an introduction to football and help decide whether kids want to continue football in the future.

Auskick Centres are also a great way to bring the community together because they are run by the community. All of the coordinators and coaches involved are volunteers and parents of the kids. Without the volunteer base of the parents, Auskick Centres would not be possible. For those interested in getting involved, contact the Auskick Coordinator of your local club.

AUSKICK REGISTRATION is NOW OPEN!

NAB AFL Auskick is the Australian Football League’s key introductory program for primary school-aged boys and girls and their families. During our weekly coaching program your child will learn the skills of the game through appropriately modified activities where the emphasis is on fun.

Enrolling your child in Auskick is the ideal way to get them involved in a great program where learning skills, understanding the importance of a team, and making new friends is the main focus. In the past year, over 167,000 kids in Australia were involved in Auskick.
UWA BEGINNERS TRAINING COURSE

The Claremont Tigers football club is offering a ten week beginner program for UWA international students to learn how to play footy. The program began on Wednesday, March 7th from 5:00pm to 6:00pm at the James Oval at the UWA campus. Training sessions are run by the Claremont District Officers Dan Barnes and Warren Parker teaching students important techniques such as marking, handballing, and kicking.

The sessions began teaching these basic techniques through a series of drills and now the students are implementing those skills in scratch matches. Each and every student has improved immensely and it is a pleasure for the District Office to run.

The UWA Beginners Training Course has been a great opportunity for students to learn a new sport and meet new friends! So far, there has been a phenomenal turnout of 28 students and counting. Please view the photos on the District Facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/Claremont.District

The program is sponsored by Hatch.

Injury Management and Prevention Course

On Tuesday, 15 May, the Claremont District Office hosted an "Injury Management and Prevention" course for all Junior Football Club coaches in the district. Eight clubs sent representatives for a total of over thirty participants. The course included a two hour presentation and demonstration session from physiotherapists Anthony McEvoy and Jon Barrett. Both physiotherapists not only work at the Lifecare Physiotherapy Cottesloe and Claremont but they also work as the physiotherapists for the Claremont Football club. They began the session by explaining techniques to manage players' acute injuries such as sprained ankles, nose bleeds, and cramps. This was followed by a question and answer session before the second part of the presentation began.

McEvoy and Barrett then moved on to discuss techniques for injury prevention. Prevention of concussions, post concussion syndrome, and other head traumas were notable topics of discussion, especially with the recent media attention that has been dedicated to these serious injuries. The presentation concluded with a question and answer session followed by a few giveaways. Claremont District Officer Dan Barnes closed the night with a final address about the importance of implementing this training, sharing the information with parents and players, and ensuring that everyone works together to prevent and manage injuries.

If you are interesting in having physiotherapists Anthony McEvoy, Jon Barrett, or another physician from Lifecare Physiotherapy center come speak to your club free of charge, please contact them at:
