Tigers' Winning Streak Over | Round 21 Reserves Match Report
Claremont’s (Reserves) five-game winning streak has come to an end, after the Tigers slumped to a 42-point defeat against Subiaco at Medibank Stadium.
Despite scores being level at quarter-time, the Lions ran away with the contest in the next three terms, on the way to a 14.11 (95) to 7.11 (53) victory.
The loss sees the Tigers face a must-win clash against West Perth in round 21, if they are to have any chance of a top-two finish.
The Tigers contended with several team changes, as Anton Hamp, Matt Orzel and Aaron Holt dropped down from the League side, with Jackson Starcevich, Kiefer Yu and Jack Richardson taking their places.
Sam Fong and Matt Goyder returned to the League side after strong showings in the Tigers’ past two wins.
Keegan Knott returned from a hamstring injury, while Tom Bowering appeared in his first game since round two, with Kaiden Gilbert making his debut for the club.
Max Bentley and Jordan Law came into the side who prevailed over Perth in round 20 for Luke Salamone and Isaac Baum, while Ashley Fitzgerald was the other out.
Early goals to Ryan Wade and Tom Smith gave Subiaco a 12-point lead, as the Tigers once again got off to a slow start for the second game running.
A booming goal to Hamp from a tight angle got the Tigers on the board at the 11-minute mark, after the forward was found by Henry Roberts.
A goal to Dylan Clarke resulted from an easy transition down the corridor, with the Lions re-establishing a 12-point lead at the 13-minute mark.
Steven Edwards then reduced the margin to six points late in the term after some great efforts by Roberts, before slotting his second after the quarter-time siren to pull the Tigers level at the first change.
Despite a slow start, the Tigers had fought back well in a quarter consisting of two halves, with coach Nigel Wilson happy with the team’s pressure and tackling.
Wilson implored his charges to attack through the corridor in the second term, as the Tigers looked to step it up a gear.
A kick to advantage by Holt saw debutant Gilbert take an imposing mark at the five-minute mark of the second term, before he went back and calmly slotted a goal from 50m to give the Tigers the lead for the first time in the match.
The Lions then hit back through a goal to Raymond Daniels, as the teams traded blows in the opening stages of the quarter.
Further goals to James Garcia and Clarke (second) handed the Lions a 10-point lead at half-time, with the hosts outplaying the Tigers for the majority of the term.
The Tigers needed a fast start to the third term, however, a third goal to Clarke saw the Lions take a 15-point lead at the eight-minute mark.
After a kick into space by Hamp, Shane McAdam ran into an open goal to reduce the deficit to just ten points, although the Lions would once again finish the quarter strongly, as goals to Garcia (second) and Jordan Bestry handed the hosts a 23-point lead at the final change.
Wilson instructed his players to improve their work at stoppages, and dig deep for a big effort in the final term.
However, goals to Daniels (second) and Clarke (third) handed the Lions a 37-point lead at the five-minute mark of the final quarter.
The Tigers hit back through goals to Ben Taylor and Hamp (second), as the margin was reduced to 25 points, however, the hosts rounded out the contest with goals to Daniels (third), Garcia (third) and Smith (second), condemning the Tigers to their seventh loss for the season.
To make matters worse for Claremont, Taylor appeared to have his number taken in the final term for a late bump.
On a tough day for the Tigers, Roberts, Orzel, John Williams and Jack Beeck led the disposals, while Hamp and Edwards were the only multiple goal kickers.
Ruckman Darcy Cameron had 46 hit outs, while Orzel and Ethan Panizza laid ten and seven tackles respectively.
The Tigers will need to improve dramatically when they take on West Perth at the Show Grounds in round 21.
