CLAREMONT DISTRICT WRAP
BY SAM ROTHAM
Season 2020 was one unlike any other and will be one remembered for many years to come. It was always set to be a ground breaking season with the move to a simpler governance structure with enhanced competition management, however just as quickly as the season began it was suddenly placed on hold as COVID-19 began to impact our Community.
This year required significant resilience and patience from everyone involved and those efforts are certainly valued and acknowledged. As a result of the efforts, the Metro North region achieved a 98% player participation retention rate. When many other winter sports faced significant declining player numbers and volunteers, this is an incredible achievement in an unprecedented year.
At the completion of the COVID season it was important to recognise those who volunteered their time to help get football back in 2020. The 2020 Awards of Excellence is a cocktail themed event which is held to recognise and celebrate those who have excelled throughout the year within the Metro North Conference. This year it was hosted at the Aquarium of Western Australia (AQWA) overlooking the picturesque views that our coastline has to offer.
It was a night to remember for Claremont District junior football clubs who managed to take out 5 of the 8 awards across the night.
2020 Metro North Junior Club of the Year – West Coast Junior Football Club
2020 Community Club Volunteer of the Year – Jodi Mills (West Coast Junior Football Club)
2020 Go for 2&5 AFL Junior Coach of the Year (Youth) – Greg Hogan (Scarborough JFC)
2020 Further with Football Award – Wembley JFC (NAIDOC Celebrations Event)
2020 NAB AFL Auskick Volunteer of the Year – Brodie McDougall (Wembley Downs Junior Football Club)
