Lions too good for Tigers

Match Report by Dan Scamozzi

Claremont’s winless run extended to four games after Subiaco dealt the Tigers a 44-point loss at the Showgrounds last Saturday.

Despite a competitive first half, a six-goal-to-two third term from Subiaco saw the Lions run out 17.13 (115) to 11.5 (71) winners and record their seventh win for the season.

Meanwhile, Claremont remains winless since round five and two games outside the top five.

The Tigers could only manage 39 inside 50s to Subiaco’s 51, and lacked efficiency when going forward.

Jye Bolton starred for Claremont with 28 disposals and two goals in midfield, while Brandon Franz repelled several Subiaco attacks and took 12 marks in defence.

Jack Richardson kicked three goals, while Ian Richardson combined his duties between the forward line and wing with two goals and 23 disposals.J. Richardson celebrates one of his three goals

And Tom Shanahan made a fine debut in Claremont colours by nullifying the dangerous Leigh Kitchin and kicking a goal.

Subiaco was best served by a match-winning haul of six goals to Hamish Shepheard, while second-gamer Liam Ryan kicked four and took a spectacular mark.

Subiaco’s Declan Jackson and Aaron Heal ensured Claremont forwards Darcy Cameron and Beau Maister had no impact on the game after keeping the pair goalless, while Lachlan Delahunty (27 disposals, one goal) and Craig Hoskins (24) won their share of the ball.

Shanahan, I. Richardson and John Williams came into the Claremont side who was defeated by South Fremantle in round eight for Keifer Yu, Hugo Breakey and Jack Beeck.

Goals to Kitchin and Shepheard gave Subiaco a fast start to the game, before Bolton and Jack Bradshaw hit back for Claremont.

Shepheard then kicked his second, before Bolton kicked truly after the quarter-time siren following a 50m penalty to cut Subiaco’s lead to six points at the first change.

Despite conceding eight more inside 50s, Claremont had Franz to thank in defence, with the evergreen defender winning 10 disposals and taking six marks for the term, despite his opponent in Shepheard kicking two goals.

Ryan gave Subiaco a 13-point lead with the opening goal of the second term, before I. Richardson sparked into life with two quick goals for Claremont to level the scores.

But four of the last five goals, including two more to Shepheard, gave Subiaco an 18-point lead at half-time, with the Lions’ greater efficiency when going forward the difference between the teams.

Goals to Brett Mahoney and Max Walters either side of a second to Bradshaw extended Subiaco’s lead in the third term, before a second to J. Richardson kept Claremont in touch.

But three goals and a spectacular mark to Ryan, along with a fifth to Shepheard, gave Subiaco the last four of the term and meant the Lions lead by 46 points at the final change.

Shepheard took his tally to six with the first goal of the final term, before goals to Shanahan, J. Richardson and Mitchell Andrews provided little more than consolation for the Tigers.

Claremont will now turn its attention to East Fremantle at the Showgrounds in round 10.
